A Second Eden: June at Bloomfield Nursery

What is so rare as a day in June? Then, if ever, come perfect days! — James Russell Lowell

The earth is bursting forth with new growth, the grass lush and green, flowering ornamental trees blooming profusely—all is joyfully vibrant!

Here at Bloomfield Nursery, we delight in finding well-hidden birds' nests among the many trees and shrubs. What a pleasure it is to listen to joyous birdsong! We are thrilled to watch a Canada goose nest next to our large irrigation pond. Four large white eggs have hatched into cute little goslings! Why not stop in and enjoy this park-like experience yourself?

June Garden Challenges and Solutions

Unfortunately, June is when those pesky bagworms appear, hatching out of small cocoons people often mistake for pine cones. Bagworms are easy to control, but spray is only effective after they hatch and before they start creating a new bag. Many local companies offer maintenance services that include bagworm control. We highly recommend Bartlett Tree Service.

Pruning Tips for June

June is also the best time to prune evergreen conifers. Trimming them now stimulates them to make many new buds for showy and dense growth next year. Remember to trim back flowering shrubs that have finished their spring blooming. These
include:

  • Forsythias and weigelas
  • Variegated willows and lilacs
  • Azaleas and rhododendrons

Father's Day Gift Ideas

Trees make perfect Father's Day gifts! You'll find a huge selection at Bloomfield Nursery. The benefit of our container-grown nursery stock is that you can plant them all season long (if you keep them watered well), whereas field-grown trees can only be planted in spring and fall.

Tree Planting and Care

Should you decide to plant your own trees, here are some guidelines:

  1. 1
    Remove the plastic container.
  2. 2
Cut the roots in 3 places on the rootball.
  3. 3
Apply our granular root stimulator with mycorrhizal fungi.
  4. 4
Work our Frey's Planting Mix into your existing soil.

Our planting inoculant has mycorrhizal fungi as the main ingredient. This helps stimulate new root growth and forms a gel, which keeps water more available to the tree's roots when conditions get hot and dry in summer.

Remember: The rules for pruning apply underground as well as above—pruning roots or foliage encourages new growth!
Watering tip: Water your new trees 2–3 times weekly until they’re well established.

Mulching benefits: Mulching your new trees helps retain moisture (so they need less watering) and suppresses weeds.

Grow Your Own Fruit!

Want to start your own orchard? Bloomfield Nursery has over 30 varieties of fruit trees! We'll happily help you design your space. Remember to bring pictures and measurements of your planting area when you shop for trees.

The Joy of Gardening

Our experience is that gardening is very therapeutic. It soothes troubled hearts, delights the senses, feeds the body, and offers us a second Eden in which to play and rest! No matter how uncertain our world seems, we can count on flowers to appear each Spring!
