Spring has arrived at Bloomfield Nursery, and it's our favorite season! After enduring a long winter of arctic blasts and icy conditions, we're ready to embrace the sweetness of spring.
Celebrating 25 Years of the Knockout Rose
Exciting news for rose lovers—2025 marks the Knockout Rose's 25th Anniversary, now featuring twelve varieties! Our top recommendation is the "Meet Petite," a compact 2'×2' knockout that produces cherry-red blossoms from May through November without requiring deadheading. These versatile roses have become a staple in our landscape designs. Remember to trim back other rose varieties in early spring. (Ornamental grasses love a spring trim too: cut them as close to the ground as possible, and they’ll reward you with a burst of fresh, vibrant growth.)

Renew Your Landscape With These Simple Steps
Is your landscape due for a refresh? Here's our simple renewal guide:
- 1Add new focal points at your home's corners—consider Weeping Blue Alaskan Cedar or Skylands Oriental Spruce for larger spaces, or Serpentined Blue Atlas Cedar and Ruby Falls Weeping Redbud if you prefer something more compact
- 2For shaded locations, try Pyramidal Boxwood, Hydrangea Tree, or Weeping Hemlock
- 3Replace ordinary shrubs flanking your front entrance with unique specimens
- 4Incorporate medium-sized boulders for natural texture and dimension
You'll be surprised what a difference a few small changes can make!
The Hidden Benefits of Winter Winds
While February and March winds might seem troublesome, they actually benefit our trees. Dense evergreens collect dead needles inside their foliage where pests and fungi thrive—winter winds naturally clean these out, resulting in healthier trees.
Our Favorite Annual: Petunia Supertunia Vista
Looking for the perfect annual? We can't recommend Petunia Supertunia Vista enough. These showstoppers come in many gorgeous colors, they're hardy to 20 degrees, and you can plant them as early as April. The pink Bubblegum variety has been our go-to choice for our own flowerbeds for years. A single plant can fill a 4'×4' space with continuous blooms that never need deadheading.
Meet the Bloomfield Family
Since 2001, we've operated as a family business on our 38-acre farm in Morrison's Cove. When you visit, you'll likely meet some combination of Allen and Ellen (the founders), Wendall and Rosella with their little ones Karla Rose and Jamien, or Justin, Lucy Rose, Janelle, and Suzanne. They're all ready to help with your landscape design questions—and yes, the children are used to fielding requests to pet the baby goats or take a pony cart ride! Life at Bloomfield is never dull.

"There is no garden so complete
But roses could make the place more sweet!
There is no life so rich and rare,
But one more friend can enter there!"
